Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs, attended and delivered a speech at the high-level meeting of the UN Security Council on 'Exhibiting Leadership for Peace' at the UN Headquarters in New York on September 25.

Wang Yi stated that peace has always been an earnest expectation of human society. However, the world is still turbulent today, facing various challenges to international peace. The conflicts between Palestine and Israel persist, and the crisis in Ukraine escalates and spills over. The resurgence of Cold War mentality, increasing risks of world division, setbacks in global development endeavors, and misuse of emerging technologies continue to pose threats to global peace and security.

Wang Yi pointed out the necessity of upholding a correct security concept for the sake of peace. Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed a global security initiative, offering fundamental principles to solve security deficits and seek lasting peace. To achieve this goal, it is essential to abide by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries, reject Cold War mentality and zero-sum games, resist group politics and confrontations, and cooperate to address new security challenges in artificial intelligence and digital networks. It is crucial to practice a concept of common, comprehensive, cooperative, and sustainable security, continually refine the global security governance system in line with the times.

In order to maintain peace, it is necessary to uphold international equity and justice. Wang Yi emphasized the equal treatment of all countries, urging nations to stand tall and fearless in the face of any hegemonism and power politics. Genuine multilateralism should be pursued, firmly upholding the international order centered around international law, engaging in security governance through consultation on an equal footing, and building lasting peace on the basis of fairness and justice. Safeguarding the authority of the Security Council and opposing any unauthorized unilateral sanctions are crucial. The Security Council should bravely shoulder its responsibilities in the Palestinian issue and play an effective role. It is urgent for Palestine to become a formal member of the United Nations. The immediate priority is to achieve a permanent ceasefire and complete withdrawal of forces in Gaza, prevent new humanitarian crises in Lebanon, and prevent further escalation of conflicts. China proposes convening a larger and more effective international conference, restarting the 'two-state solution' at the earliest to promote a comprehensive, fair, and lasting resolution of the Palestinian issue.

In the pursuit of peace, it is vital to adhere to political diplomatic solutions. Wang Yi stressed that only through diplomatic negotiations can true peace be achieved, and only through political solutions can peace be sustained. Parties involved should respect each other's legitimate concerns and seek common ground while shelving differences. The international community should create conditions and space for political solutions. China's position on the Ukraine crisis has been consistent, advocating for peace and dialogue to promote a political resolution. China has issued a position paper on the political resolution of the Ukraine crisis, dispatched special envoys for diplomatic mediation, and jointly released the 'Six-Point Consensus' with Brazil to gather more balanced, objective, and rational voices, creating conditions for ceasefire and ending conflict, accumulating momentum for dialogue and negotiation, and making efforts for peace realization.

To promote common sustainable development for peace, Wang Yi emphasized the intrinsic connection between peace and development. It is crucial to support developing countries, especially post-conflict nations, in achieving independent development in ways that match their national conditions and eliminate the root causes of conflicts. The international community should offer constructive assistance based on the principle of respecting the leading role of the countries involved, rather than interfering in other nations' internal affairs under various pretexts.

Wang Yi stated that China is the world's best-recorded major country in peace and the only major country to have enshrined the pursuit of peaceful development in its constitution, consistently contributing to the maintenance of world peace through practical actions. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence. China is willing to work with all countries to promote the spirit of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence and jointly build a better world of lasting peace and universal security.
